I have a confession. It’s been 3 weeks since I last had coffee and I don’t miss it. At all. That’s a shocking revelation coming from someone like me who chugs coffee every single day not because I need it, but because I love the dark, bitter, bold brew.
Earlier this month, I’ve switched to a naturopathic doctor who can help me with my hormonal issues and inflammation. Together with her nutritionist, they got me on a modified autoimmune Paleo plan for at least 4 – 6 weeks before we slowly reintroduce each type of food that was taken out. I will talk more about this in a future blog post but without getting into too much detail, coffee (or anything with caffeine) is out of the picture.
That made me a very sad panda but then I remembered this coffee alternative that I bought from Delicious Obsessions awhile back. I dug it out of my cabinet and immediately brewed a big batch of the Herbal Coffee – Happy Liver Blend on the stove. Every morning, I will heat up a cup (or 2, who am I kidding) and add homemade coconut milk (this DIY method is in my book One-Pot Paleo), collagen peptides and raw honey. This concoction warmed my belly and made me happy while satisfying my craving for coffee. I am seriously hooked!
Delicious Obsessions stopped selling their herbal coffee mixes but instead, they now have an e-book that has the recipe blends so I was able to make it at home. I stocked up on the ingredients and tweaked the Happy Liver Blend a bit based on my taste preference. The e-book also includes other blends such as the classic Clean Living, Spicy Chai, Pumpkin Spice and Creamy Cocoa. Once the weather starts to cool down a bit, I think I’ll be making the Spicy Chai and Pumpkin Spice next!
For those who are looking for a coffee alternative, this is what I would highly recommend. I’ve seen commercially available brands but all of them are made with barley or rye which contain gluten so they are not good choices for those that have gluten sensitivities.
(Pssst… the e-book is currently 25% off until tomorrow, Aug 31st!)
